That was 24 years ago. I've come a long way, and learned A LOT since then. I've worked for a number of large corporations (and some smaller) over the years in the engineering / design field and some technical management positions. I've always worked on my own projects and had some idea of where I wanted to take things. This site sort-of serves as a PORTFOLIO IN PROGRESS for the many things I've done over the last 15 years, and where I'm headed. Unfortunately the vast majority of it was not documented by me very well (lack of digital camera). I hope to change this moving forward.
I've been interested in RE for a while. Probably almost as long as I've been interested in Radio (liscenced Amateur operator since age 14 - KB2UHF, and yes I learned code to get my ticket!). Since Jr. High, I used to build little wind turbines and float them out on rafts in the bay to power lights. I've had many failures and successes alike. I quickly learned that Long Island has some of the best wind resources around. Over the years ahead, I've built other slightly larger machines to power portable, and stationary, radio transmitting equipment that I liked to build and operate. I always thought the two technologies (Amateur Radio / RE) went hand in hand. Solar PV lends itself nice to this also and I got into playing with that too.
I speak of RE "technology" like its something new. IT'S NOT!! Wind energy is hundreds of years old. Wind electric is over 100 years old. Basic alternator technology must be close to 150 years old. PV is over 50 years old. With the exception of inverters, Neodymium magnets and slight improvements overall, this stuff has been around forever. Although the physics and math that govern how these things work can be rather complicated the farther you delve in, it doesn't need to be in order for you to have an operational system or to understand the basics. This is something you learn when you have the DIY gene. Dont get me wrong, I never did mind math as long as I could relate it to something.
Maybe 7 years ago, I decided to see If I could live, solely on the power produced by some of the wind turbines I've constructed (off grid). BANG!! --I caught "the bug" REAL BAD. I couldn't shake it since, and It starts to become sort-of,...an obsession... good thing its A LOT of fun. :-) go
